The Nevada Youth
Training Center
operates
Independence High
School, a
Junior-Senior High
School program.
The school is
accredited by the
Northwest
Association of
Schools and Colleges
and the State of
Nevada. It offers
required and
elective subjects,
remedial programming
in reading,
language, and
mathematics, special
education, personal
development,
vocational training,
and career
exploratory
classes. All
teachers are
certified and
licensed by the
Nevada Department of
Education.
The school itself
operates as a
separate school
district
unaffiliated with
the local county
schools and is the
only school of this
nature in Nevada.
Independence High
School is normally
in session fifty-one
(51) weeks per
year. Class
scheduling is done
each week for new
students and for
those students who
have completed the
course requirements
or otherwise need a
class change.

The Northwestern
Association on
Schools and Colleges
has rated
Independence High
School with
"Exemplary Status"
three times. It was
first recognized in
1992/1993, again in
1993/1994 and most
recently in
1998/1999. Programs
are designed for the
pupils to earn
vocational
competency
certificates, G.E.D.
certificates, and
adult high school
diplomas.
Independence High
School is a member
of the Nevada
Interscholastic
Activity Association
and is classed as a
double A school (AA)
in football,
basketball, track &
field, cross
country, wrestling,
and Academic
Olympics.
Independence High
School competes with
public and private
schools for League
and State
Championships.
GRADUATION
To graduate from
high school with a
Standard Diploma,
the student must
earn twenty-two and
one half (22 1/2)
credits in approved
subject areas. He
must earn fifteen
(15) credits in
required subject
areas and seven and
one half (7 1/2)
credits in elective
areas.
Academic
non-required classes
and vocational
courses can be taken
for elective
credits. To
graduate with a
standard diploma the
student must also
take and pass the
standardized
Proficiency Test,
which is given in
October, February,
April, and June each
year.

CERTIFICATE
REQUIREMENTS
The student must
have terminated
public school
secondary
education. He must
be seventeen (17)
years of age. He
must pass the G.E.D.
certified test.
VOCATIONAL
CERTIFICATE
REQUIREMENTS
Students who
complete a minimum
of six (6) weeks of
vocational
instruction and
receive instructor
approval for
proficiency
achieved, may
receive a vocation
certificate.
TRANSCRIPTS
Student transcripts
are provided upon
his release/parole.
